Laurel Harrish Photography | What to Expect

All sessions are held on location at an agreed upon time and place. Most people choose their home, a park, a certain spot in the city or anywhere else they feel a special connection. Since I specialize in natural-light photography, the best time to schedule a shoot depends on the time of year and optimal lighting conditions at the location: usually morning and early evening. Of course, I am flexible and will work my best to accommodate your family’s needs.

A pre-session consultation is done over the phone so we can finalize all the details. I am also happy to meet in person if you prefer. Here, we will discuss your family, location ideas, what to wear, what vision you may have for the photo shoot, and how image purchasing works.

In order to devote as much time and attention as I possibly can to each client, I am only available for a limited number of sessions per month. Currently, most sessions take place on the weekends, but I am occasionally able to make an exception for a day or evening session during the week. Just contact me and we can discuss ways to make it work.

Typically, a standard portrait or family session will last anywhere from 1.5-2 hours. This allows us time to get to know each other, relax and have fun. It also provides extra time for cuddles, snacks and recharging for the little ones. Being the mom of two young girls, I know how often kids need time to catch their breath, especially when there is so much focus on them. We never want to rush them, force a pose or make them feel they have to “perform” a certain way – this often results in unhappy children, unnatural expressions and poor photographs.

Instead, I will suggest an area to walk to, or a place to stand or sit, utilizing the surroundings and the best natural lighting available. Once we do that, I prefer to let families take the lead and just unfold into the situation themselves. This will create the perfectly natural photos everyone is hoping for.

I will often try to get group shots out of the way early in the session if possible, so the rest of the time your children can relax and enjoy themselves. When the kids are allowed to just be kids, their true personalities shine through. Typically, the end of the session is the time we capture the most amazing candid shots. It usually involves a lot of running, climbing, getting dirty and laughing (from both me and the kids).

Of course, no two families are alike and your custom session will depend on your family dynamic, the time of day and your children’s personalities. Some kids just need a little more time to warm up to a stranger with a camera – no problem at all. In this situation, we plan as we go so we can make the whole experience as easy and pleasant as we can for everyone involved. At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun.

A newborn session will usually last about 3 hours. This gives us plenty of extra time for feedings, snuggles, diaper changing, and getting baby to sleep. Sessions are usually held at a client’s home, although we can definitely make a trip outdoors if the weather permits. Because newborn sessions are typically held within the first 10 days of life, please be sure to contact me early in your pregnancy so we can set a time frame for your session.

My personal style for newborn photography is best described as lifestyle or photojournalistic. I love to capture the tiny details that are fleeting in those first few weeks: the teeny toes, the  wispy hair, the sleepy yawns, and the curly limbs. You won’t see me doing much newborn “posing” during your session. While newborn posing is wonderful, I much prefer to capture your new baby in his or her natural environment. This usually means napping in a beautifully lit corner of your home, curled up in your arms or interacting with the entire family. My goal is to capture this special time as simply and genuinely as possible.

A couple or engagement session will usually last about 1-2 hours. The majority of the time is usually spent just wandering, hanging out and having fun. Most couples will choose a location or activity that is dear to them and showcases something that they love to do together - a walk in a favorite park or neighborhood, sharing a drink while shooting pool in a favorite bar, grabbing ice cream at their local parlor - the idea is to get as creative and personal to each couple as possible.

A few days after your session, I will post a sneak peek on the blog of my website. The sneak peek usually has a brief description of the shoot as well as a few edited photos from your session.

Within 2 weeks you will receive your custom, password-protected, proofing gallery of 25-35 digitally enhanced, watermarked, low-resolution images. Your private, online gallery will be live for 14 days before it is taken down to make room for new client images. In that time, you can share your gallery with friends and family if you wish, order the prints and digital files from your chosen collection or upgrade to another collection as well as order any additional a la carte products.

Environmental headshots and small, special event photography, such as birthday, engagement, anniversary parties, baby showers, etc. may be available upon special request. Please send me a message for availability.
